Research Associate – Biogas
You will work on the feedstocks and the biology behind them — what a substrate is worth, what it does to a digester, and how to get more out of it. The work is meant to reach the plant, not just the report.
What you will do
- Run biomethane potential tests and lab-scale digesters on candidate feedstocks.
- Characterise substrates — solids, volatile solids, C:N, inhibitors — and keep the feedstock library current.
- Trial pre-treatment and co-digestion strategies, and quantify what they actually buy.
- Track digester health markers and flag the drift before it becomes an upset.
- Write up findings so the process and operations teams can act on them.
What we ask for
- A Master’s or PhD in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science or Chemical Engineering.
- One to four years in a laboratory, ideally on anaerobic digestion or fermentation.
- Hands-on analytical technique, and the discipline to keep a record someone else can follow.
- An interest in what happens to the work once it leaves the bench.
What we offer
- A laboratory attached to working plants, so results get tested at scale.
- Support for publication and for conference attendance.
- Health cover for you and your dependants, and a training budget.
